A federal by-election in Beaches-East York is now imminent

A federal by-election could come any minute here in Beaches-East York, following the resignation of Liberal MP, Nathaniel Erskine-Smith, though Prime Minister Carney has yet to set a date.

As New Democrats in the riding, we are preparing for this by-election, to be the conduit for sending an NDP MP from Toronto to Ottawa.

We welcome your support for the coming campaign. Please donate and volunteer. When we come together we accomplish great things!

Liberal prime minister Mark Carney's "openness" to conservative Alberta Premier Danielle Smith's efforts to expand private two-tier health care in Alberta has not gone unnoticed by proponents of US-style, market-based, private health care in Canada who are praising it.

Although European countries with mixed private and public healthcare are sometimes cited as mocels, Canada's proximity to the United States and it largely for-profit healthcare system, as well as corporate interests in a similar conversion.

This federal Liberal stance is a particular danger here in Ontario where Doug Ford's Conservatives have been chipping away at our public health care system and showing an affinity for health care privatization and two-tiered health care.

Following the passage of the federal Liberals' Bill C-30 on June 30, 2026, which included provisions that weaken Canada’s pesticide regulations, NDP MP Gord Johns, Critic for Health and Agriculture, issued the following statement: “Today, the Liberal government decided to let corporate lobbyists write the rules on pesticides rather than prioritizing the health and safety of Canadians.

Instead of passing proposed amendments that could have blunted some of the worst impacts of the bill, the Liberal government chose to shut down debate and fast-track the passing of their omnibus bill.

"Have we learned nothing?”

Marit Stiles on the end of Ontario wastewater testing

QUEEN’S PARK – Marit Stiles, Leader of the Ontario NDP, released the following statement in response to Ford halting wastewater testing for COVID-19 and other viruses:

“We all went through a tough time facing COVID-19 and dealing with the impacts of a pandemic and a lockdown. Reliable wastewater testing is one of the tools we have at our disposal to monitor and prepare for future public health emergencies – why would we take that away? Has Ford learned nothing from the past few years? This program needs to be expanded, not ended.”

The Ontario NDP have repeatedly called for a reversal of this decision and have called for the program to be expanded and invested in instead.
