Vision care is essential care – the Ontario NDP has long advocated for expansion of head to toe health care

The Ontario Liberals delisted routine eye examinations in 2004, which the Ontario NDP fought very hard against. They badly underfunded vision care for kids and seniors, letting this problem spiral out of control.

Today, optometrists and their patients suffer from decades of chronic cuts to vision care.

We urge the Ford government to step up and provide financial supports to prevent optometrists from making the difficult decision to close their clinics because they cannot afford to stay open.

The Ford government must provide funding to stabilize the sector and allow patients to have uninterrupted access to vision care while following public health measures.

  • Government underfunding and refusal to come to the table with optometrists has caused all vision care covered by OHIP to stop on Sept. 1.
  • All kids and all seniors are being denied vision care – even if they have health insurance.
  • Doug Ford now refuses to come to the table to negotiate, and refuses to pay for a fair plan with optometrists— forcing children and seniors into crisis. He just doesn’t want to spend the money.

  • Get back to the table and negotiate a fair plan
  • Put proper funding in place to make sure children and seniors get eye care
