Declare homelessness a public health crisis

Sixty percent of Ontario’s homeless population lives in the GTA — well over 10,000 people. Many are Black, Indigenous, racialized, identify as 2SLGBTQ, women, or are marginalized in other ways because systems of racism and discrimination are among the key drivers that push people into such precarious living conditions.

Decades of Liberal and Conservative underfunding and poor protections for tenants have left too many people homeless and precariously housed. The need to provide safe, accessible, supportive transitional and permanent housing is urgent.

  • Support MPP Rima Berns-McGown’s motion to declare homelessness a public health crisis, to temporarily house people experiencing homelessness in hotels or spaces where they can self-isolate and to increase funding for permanent and transitional housing.
  • Call on the Doug Ford government to provide immediate financial support to the City of Toronto and other municipalities to help house folks outside of the shelter system and provide dignity to those who choose to stay in encampments.
