By passing Bill 110 (The Building Billy Bishop Airport Act), Ontario's Conservative government gave Doug Ford the power to seize control of the Toronto Islands, Billy Bishop Airport, and Little Norway Park.
As part of the scheme, Ford has declared the airport a special economic zone using the undemocratic Bill 5 which allows the Ontario government to bypass environmental, safety, and municipal laws and disregard the residents of Toronto's island and waterfront communities and the sensitive ecosystems in the area.
Make no mistake that the airport expansion - confirmed by the Toronto Port Authority as including an extension of the runway by an additional 900 metres at a cost of up to $5 billion - will be permanently damaging to human health and the environment.
In addition to the tangible ways that it will make life in Toronto harder, Ford's land grab undermines the importance of municipal decision-making and public consultation with Toronto's waterfront communities, including our own here in Beaches-East York.
