Doug Ford is trying to force through an expansion of the Billy Bishop Airport by expropriating green spaces, ignoring years of concerns about noise, pollution, and the future of Toronto’s waterfront, and overriding the City of Toronto and the will of residents like us.
Mark Carney's Liberal government could stop Ford’s takeover of the Island Airport. They could stand with the City and the people who live there. Instead, they are staying silent while openly talking about airport privatization across the country that would benefit corporate interests, who are preparing to swoop in.
This Liberal "inaction" has the hallmarks of a new kind of privatization through which governments like Carney's weaken democratic oversight, sideline communities, and treat public infrastructure more like a corporate investment opportunity than a public good.
And that's not the worst of it. Expanding Billy Bishop Airport to allow for jets would worsen our water and air quality, increase noise pollution, and destroy sensitive harbour ecosystems forever.
